ISLAMABAD, Nov 21: Police on Friday tightened security at embassies and consulates in the country following the devastating suicide bombings of a British consulate and bank in Turkey, officials said.
A day after twin bombings in Istanbul killed at least 27 people, including Britain’s consul general, police assigned to embassies in Islamabad were placed on high alert.
“We have mobilised all resources and put them on alert to protect diplomatic missions and key government installations,” chief of the police force’s special diplomatic protection department, Ehsan Sadiq, told AFP.
The British embassy and consulates remained open, but officials were tight-lipped on security measures.
The British government linked the Istanbul attack to the Al Qaeda network, saying they bore “all the hallmarks” of the network.
In Karachi extra police force was deployed to guard consulates and commercial Western sites.
Police at the US and British consulates were ordered to be more vigilant “to forestall any terror attacks,” city police chief Tariq Jamil told AFP.
