KARACHI: JI seeks curb on extortion

Published November 21, 2003

KARACHI, Nov 20: Jamaat-i-Islami organized a protest demonstration in New Karachi on Thursday against what it called, “extortion by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in the name of Zakat and Fitra collection.”

The protesters were carrying placards and banners in their hands inscribed with slogans Down with extortionists and Karachiites will not tolerate extortion. They vociferously chanted slogans against the MQM and accused it of fleecing people in the holy month of Ramazan.

Meanwhile, Abdus Sattar Afghani (MNA), speaking at an Iftar party in Korangi, severely criticized the MQM and remarked: “MQM and extortion are one and the same.”

He claimed that armed activists of the party had adopted extortion practice and taken it to the top in order to meet the expenditure of their London-based leader’s luxurious living.—PPI
