BEIJING, Nov 17: A spokesman of the Chinese foreign office, Liu Jianchao, has termed the report of the US Central Intelligence Agency regarding China’s alleged support to Pakistan’s nuclear power programme totally baseless.

Commenting on the new CIA report released last week, the spokesman said all nuclear cooperation between China and Pakistan “is only limited to nuclear power plant and has been under safeguard and monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”

China is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT). “China is definitely against any form of proliferation of nuclear weapons.”

The spokesman said China supported the peaceful use of nuclear power by various states under the strict monitoring and safeguarding of the IAEA.

He said China had always been opposed to proliferation of ballistic missiles that could carry the weapons of mass destruction.

Export control regulations of missile and missile-related items and technologies promulgated by the Chinese government last August were being effectively and strictly carried out, he added.

“The accusation of the USA is baseless,” the spokesman added. According to the sources, the promulgation of the regulations “is an important measure” of the Chinese government to strengthen control over exports.—APP
