Customs poised for victory


KARACHI, Nov 17: Pakistan Customs were poised for an important victory in their pool “A” Patron’s Trophy qualifiers against Defence Housing Authority (DHA) at the National Stadium on Monday.

Customs made 161 in their first inning and resuming their second innings at overnight score of 22 without loss, managed to score 258 thanks to a fighting 95 by Shahbaz Butt.

DHA shot out for 80 in their first outing and were set a target of 340 in 117 overs, but were struggling at 119 for five in their second innings at draw of stumps on the second day in three-day game. Asif Zakir hit second half century of the match.

Shahbaz batted confidently hitting 11 boundaries and two sixes in his enterprising knock off 86 balls. Kamran Hussain finished 36 not out with seven hits to the ropes.

Pacer Rizwan Saeed again bowled well, taking four wickets for 88 runs in 22 overs, following his six for 58 in the first innings to finish with match haul of ten wickets for 146 runs. Left arm paceman Nasir Khan got four for 95 to end with eight wickets in the match.

Customs are lying third behind PIA (36) and DHA (27) with 21 points. A win in their last match will put Customs past DHA with another nine points to raise their tally to 30.

DHA will play their last league match against pool “A” leader PIA from Thursday. Two top teams from each pool will qualify for the Patron’s Trophy first class competition starting next month.

At UBL Sports Complex, responding to KESC first innings score of 281, Pakistan Navy were bowled out for 166, thus conceding 115 runs first innings lead.

Muhammad Waheed top-scored (40) for Navy. Medium pacer Wajahat Farooq caused the main damage in Navy batting with five wickets for 50 runs in 23 overs. Saeed Khan bagged three for 56 in 17 overs.

By close of play KESC extended their lead to 221 by reaching 106 for one wicket in their second innings. Khurram Manzoor and Kamran bin Mansoor were at the crease with 43 and 13 runs respectively. First innings centurion Daniyal Ahsan made 40.

PWD TAKE LEAD


Opener Agha Sabir hit his third consecutive hundred for Dewan Farooqi Motors Ltd (DFML) but failed to prevent Pak PWD from taking 45 runs first innings lead at Quaid-i-Azam Park ground Steel Township.

Lefthanded Sabir, who hit an unbeaten 107 against PIA and 113 against Custom, blasted 116 with eight eight and brace of sixes as DFML were bowled out for 280 in 82 overs. PWD amassed 325 in their first outing.

PWD’s Riaz Shaikh completed a fine all-round performance in the match. After scoring 102, Riaz captured seven wickets foor 96 runs in 30 overs.

Sabir added 77 runs for the fourth wicket with Rehan Rafiq who hit 29.
