LAHORE, Nov 17: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool on Monday approved to start MSc bio-medical engineering and diploma in medical technology courses at University of Health Sciences in collaboration with the University of Engineering and Technology.

The UHS and UET would jointly offer the degree that would be recognized by the Pakistan Engineering Council and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.

The UHS will hold entrance test to select 20 students for admission every year.

The decision was taken in a meeting of committee that was entrusted the task to finalize bio-medical engineering postgraduation courses at Governor’s House.

The meeting was told that the students having BSc degrees in electrical engineering, mechatronics, bio-medical engineering, computer engineering and electronics would be eligible for admission to bio-medical engineering which comprises 18-month theoretical studies and six-month on-job research training.

The successful graduates would maintain and repair electro-medical equipments in all 231 government hospitals.

It was also decided to launch a two-year medical technician diploma for FSc or electro-medical technology certificate holders from any technical education institution working under the Tevta.

The meeting was attended by UET vice-chancellor Muhammad Akram, UHS VC Prof Malik Husain Mubashir, AIMC radiology department head Prof Nasir Raza Zaidi, Khwarizmi Institute of Computer Sciences director-general Prof Dr Noor Muhammad, Inmol director Dr Saeeda Asghar, Inmol’s bio-medical engineering department in charge Rizwan Khalid, UET’s Dr A. K. Sulehria, Phillips electrical chief engineer Shamim Qadir and others attended the meeting.
