Lover’s Lady canters to victory in style

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Nov 16: Lover’s Lady cantered to victory in style, ending the pretensions of Captain Crash at the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting held on Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.

Ridden once again by jockey Shahid Mannan, the chestnut filly never gave her large band of supporters any anxious moments, as she sped over the six furlongs holding off the late challenge by Captain Crash with plenty to spare.

Shahid back from England a few weeks ago, stole the riding honours with another brace of winners. The young jockey piloted home Edward Chou’s chestnut colt Yaqoob Choice trained by Gulbaz, to another thrilling victory earlier in the fourth event.

Edward Chou and Gulbaz were not to be left behind. The pair also added a brace of winners to their collection, when the bay filly Trust Me having the services of Murad Ali in the saddle, romped to victory in the previous event, with Fizza, Pearl and Lucky Lover completing the frame.

In the fourth race the performance of Fantastic Fighter left much to be desired. After finishing first and second in his last two outings, the dark bay colt after missing the jump when the race began trailed in the far distance among the also ran with 17 runners in the field.

Ridden by Lateef Fantastic Fighter never seemed to interested in any part of the race. No questions were asked and no answers had to be given.

Ironically Fantastic Fighter, a keen sprinter is the property of a gentleman who is the current racing advisor to the new administrator Fakir Syed Aitazaz Uddin. Some food for thought indeed.

Trainer Mansoor Alam also shared the limelight with a good double. He saddled his first winner on Sunday afternoon, when Law Of Nature ridden by Zubair Ahmed won the second race, beating Much Better by just 3/4 of a length.

Mansoor scored again in the fifth race when outsider Gillespie ridden by Kashif Ali, beat Power Plus by a neck, after the two were engaged in a neck-and-neck tussle.

In this race Star Of The Day partnered by Sher Mohammad, was another runner that surprisingly never even finished on the board, after coming first and twice second in his last three outings.

Once again to the surprise of the large gathering no questions were asked about Star Of The Day and no fairy tales had to be invented.

Another race that had the crowd on their feet was witnessed in the concluding event, when Yayha Shahid’s thoroughbred bay horse Charkh Bareen brilliantly ridden by jockey M. Barani, beat the raging favourite Love You Lady in his last strides.

Love U Lady, a thoroughbred four-year-old filly from the Pagaro stable partnered by M. Nasir, seemed to have grabbed the race for the mere asking after passing Pakistan’s champion sprinter Blues Traveller, making his appearance on this track after several months.

But Charkh Bareen sprinting alongside when heads for turned for home and won the race by half a length with Keen Winner and Blues Traveller completing the frame. After the event was over the rider of Love U Lady raised an objection against the rider of Charkh Bareen for bumping and boring in the straight.

However, the objection was soon overruled.
