KARACHI: Law and order in Sindh reviewed


KARACHI, Nov 16: Law and order in the province was reviewed and steps for its improvement were considered at a high-level meeting, presided over by Sindh Governor, held at the Governor’s House on Sunday.

The governor called for effective security arrangements at shopping centres and bazars before Eidul Fitr.

He also issued directives for better traffic arrangements and safe movement of the people.

At the meeting, the Sindh police inspector general, DG Rangers and Home secretary briefed the governor about the latest law and order situation in the province and the steps taken to improve it.

Mr Ibad appreciated the performance of 15 police help line and expressed the hope that designs of anti-social elements would be thwarted with mutual cooperation of police and public.

The meeting was also attended by Home Affairs Advisor Aftab Shaikh, Acting Chief Secretary, Ghulam Sarwar Khero, Principal Secretary, Brig Akhtar Zamin, and senior police officials.

IRRIGATION SYSTEM: Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has said the government is determined to implement the programme for the improvement of irrigation system and drainage on priority basis and in this regard effective arrangements will be ensured.

He was speaking at a meeting held here on Sunday at Governor House to discuss the National Drainage Programme (NDP) and Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA).

The meeting was informed that in view of the inflow of some 12,000 cusecs effluent from Balochistan, it had been decided to expand the capacity of first and second phase of the Right Bank Outfall Drain (RBOD). In this regard both the phases would be reviewed and finalized.

The governor said the present government was committed to the continuation and success of President Musharraf’s reform programme. He directed the concerned authority to make full preparation for talks with World Bank on cooperation in the irrigation and drainage programme and in this regard input should also be sought from all stakeholders.

The meeting was attended by Senior Minister Finance Syed Sardar Ahmed, Irrigation Minister Sadruddin Shah, Planning Minister Shoaib Bukhari, Agriculture Minister Arif Jatoi, Acting Chief Secretary Ghulam Sarwar Khero, Principal Secretary to the Governor Brig Akhtar Zamin and senior officials of the irrigation and agriculture departments.

Mr Khero informed the meeting that short-, mid- and long-term plans were being chalked out for the restoration, reorganization and improvement of the system.

SIDa Chairman and Provincial Coordinator of NDP Brig Abdul Haq briefed the meeting about the programme. He said efforts were being made for the implementation of a coordinated programme and judicious distribution of agricultural water, better management and water supply to the tail-enders. — APP
