KARACHI, Nov 16: The prices of tomatoes in the market will come down next month when Sindh reaps a new crop.
This was stated by the president of the Wholesale Vegetable Traders Welfare Association, Mohammad Shahjahan, here on Sunday.
“Tomato prices will continue to remain high till next month after the arrival of new crop in the market”, he told APP.
Information collected from various markets on Sunday showed that tomatoes was being sold at Rs35 to Rs40 per kilogram in the city.
A house wife, Rehana Shah, said tomatoes were sold at Rs45 to Rs50 per kilo last week. The price of tomatoes has come down to Rs40 but this is still on a very high side. It should be Rs10 per kilo, she added.
Mr Shahjahan said that the wholesale price of tomatoes was ranging from Rs28 to Rs30 per kilogram in the new Sabzi Mandi on Super Highway.
He said tomato prices were high due to crop damage in the heavy monsoon rains all over the country.
He said the growers had re-sown tomato crop after the damage. This had resulted in delay in arrival of crop in the market, he added.
“Another reason for this shortage is the last year’s low prices of tomatoes were due to a bumper crop. This forced growers not to cultivate tomatoes this season in large quantity”.— APP
