LAHORE, Nov 15: Three-year-old English filly, Snow Drop, alongwith two Pakistani thoroughbred colts Saqi and Tora Bora, are the strong contenders for the Hasan Abdal Plate, a class IV event to be contested over 1400m during the 10th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

A handicap race, this will be the supporting and sixth event of a seven card programme featuring the Mianwali Cup.

The Hasan Abdal Plate has a big field of 18 acceptors, barring last-minute withdrawals. On the past performances, only the above-named three come into reckoning.

Snow Drop, a filly from Pretardia (GB) out-of-Richardstown Lass (IRE) has already proved her worth in two previous outings, winning a race in the same class carrying a lower weight in handicap on Sept 14 last.

The bay colt Saqi (King Of Saxon-Mabish) ran a very good race on last Sunday over a mile. Another bay colt Tora Bora (Baker’s Gate-Nair De Fleur) has so far won four races and has been placed once and is in good trim.

Although Saqi and Tora Bora are equally fast runners, Snow Drop, on her bloodline should have the better of other two locally bred colts.

The bay filly Sugar And Honey and the bay colt Flood Of Gold are the top contenders for the Mianwali Cup, the feature and class V event to be run over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres. Being a more seasoned runner and on form Sugar And Honey have an edge over her less experienced rival in Flood Of Gold.

The other five events on the card look competitive and fully packed with form runners. Some close finishes are expected to the delight of race-fans.

Meanwhile the Mona Stud Farms have allowed owners to run their leased colts and fillies in races. The two-year-old can run in races with effect from October 26 last while the three- year-old are permitted to take part in races from January 2004. The first race will start at 12pm.
