KARACHI, Nov 14: The Pakistan People’s Party has accused the government of failing to provide relief to common man from price-hike, unemployment and adequate health and education cover.

The allegations came from the party’s Deputy Secretary General Senator Raza Rabbani, leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and Muzaffar Shujra who were talking to newsmen at an Iftar dinner hosted by city chief of the PPP.

The government had failed and the parliament is not functioning, Senator Rabbani observed, and also accused the regime of harming the cause of Islamic solidarity.

He said that the reconstitution of the National Finance Commission was a victory of the opposition, particularly the PPP which vigorously pursued the issue to ensure an equitable resource allocation.

Mr Rabbani said the federating units would very carefully watch the proceedings of the NFC, which is to meet on Nov 18, so that they did not resort to a sellout or compromise on the positions of the federating units.

Mr Khuhro, in reply to a question, said the government was trying to keep maximum powers through new police laws as it was feeling insecure.

Mr Shujra termed law and order ‘precarious’ and said that the regime was trying to suppress the voice of dissent through coercive means. He also criticized the government for increasing the cost of utilities and petroleum products every now and then. Meanwhile, PPP activists, led by the party’s information secretary Raheel Iqbal staged a protest demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club on Friday against detention of Asif Ali Zardari.
