KARACHI, Nov 14: Sindh chief minister’s adviser on local government Waseem Akhtar said on Friday that local bodies elections would be held on the completion of the four-year term of the present councils.

Talking to newsmen at an Iftar hosted by him here, he said under the Sindh Local Government Ordinance, the Local Government Commission can only conduct inquiry against Nazims, but cannot suspend anyone.

He said that 300 inquiries against Nazims are pending with the Local Government Commission and of them 100 have been completed.

Waseem Akhtar told a questioner that suggestions have been received from various Nazims for amendments in SLGO.

He said the provincial government and the city government would work together for the welfare of the province and the city so that problems of the people are resolved.

Replying to questions, City Nazim Naimatullah Khan said that the city district government is working for the development of the city and welfare of the people.

He said the city district government and the provincial government have no differences and both are working within the assigned parameters.

Regarding the progress made in respect of Rs 29 billion Karachi package, the Nazim said that a committee had been set up for the implementation of Karachi package. This committee also includes the MPAs.

To a question, Naimatullah said that no case against any Nazim or Naib Nazim had been sent to the NAB.

Talking to newsmen at the Iftar party, MQM’s parliamentary leader, MNA Farooq Sattar said the objective of the opposition behind their agitation is nothing but to sidetrack the government from solving the basic problems of the people which include poverty and unemployment.

He said political reforms are essential to strengthen democracy. He said the existing role of the opposition is not going to contribute towards the strengthening of democracy.

He said the problems of people would be resolved when provinces would have their grievances resolved.

The Iftar was attended, among others, by labour minister Adil Siddiqi, planning and development minister Shoaib Bukhari, Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan, additional secretary local government Mohammed Saleem Khan, project director of Lyari Expressway Rehabilitation Scheme Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, DCO Mir Hussain Ali and other senior officials of the local government department.—APP
