Free movement of Saarc journalists supported
NEW DELHI, Nov 11: Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad said on Tuesday that Pakistan “supports free movement of journalists” in Saarc member-states but necessary modalities “need to be worked out in this regard.”
Talking to Indian reporters after the conclusion of the second session of Saarc information ministers conference, Mr Ahmed said no decision had yet been taken concerning free movement of media persons. He added that foreign and interior ministries will have to be consulted before taking such a decision.
Responding to a question, he said Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee “is a man of vision” and “has the courage to take bold decisions.”
In response to another question, Sheikh Rashid said that journalists from Saarc countries should be exempted from visa requirements to travel to member states. But certain rules and regulations will have to be evolved before taking a decision, he added.
Responding to several queries about the free movement of journalists, the minister said seven senior journalists from Pakistan, belonging to Jang, Nawai-i-Waqt and Dawn groups, were not granted visa to cover this conference, “which is regrettable.” Only lip-service will not serve the purpose. Practical measures needed to be taken, he added.
About the ban on Indian TV channels in Pakistan, Mr Ahmad said it was a minor issue. Indian channels had already switched over to DTH, while Pakistani channels was also heading towards the DTH regime. He, however, said this matter could be discussed between the two sides.
Replying to another question, he clarified that there was no ban on artists and singers’ visit to Pakistan. —APP
