HYDERABAD, Nov 11: The All Sindh Taluka/Town Nazims’ Alliance at a meeting held here on Monday rejected recommendations of a sub-committee, appointed by the Sindh cabinet, with regard to sorting out affairs of local councils.

The meeting resolved to launch a protest movement and also seek intervention of the court if political interference in affairs of the local government system was not stopped and the Sindh Local Government Ordinance was not implemented in letter and spirit.

The president of the alliance, Ghulam Mustafa Khaskheli, presided over the meeting.

Talking to journalists at the end of the meeting, Mr Khaskheli said the meeting rejected the recommendations of the Sindh cabinet sub-committee that the one-year extension granted to local government representatives should be withdrawn and that members of national and Sindh assemblies be included in district advisory councils to oversee development works.

He said the meeting also rejected the proposal that the advisory councils should be given the authority to issue show-cause notices to Nazims.

Mr Khaskheli made it clear that councillors and taluka Nazims would not accept the recommendations as they were tantamount to political interference in the affairs of councils and there was no provision for such proposals in the SLGO.

He warned that if Nazims were not given the powers under the existing ordinance and the political interference was not stopped, the alliance would launch a protest movement and file a case in the relevant court of law in which the National Reconstruction Bureau chairman would be made a party.

Answering a question, the alliance chief said a memorandum containing 39 demands was submitted to the authorities concerned in Islamabad.

He said the authorities accepted the demands and also wrote a letter to the Sindh government to implement the charter of demands but the provincial government ignored the directives.

He said some talukas were receiving funds directly and demanded that DCOs should follow the rule in all talukas.

He further demanded that the government should order an inquiry into the lapse of development funds.

Those who attended the meeting included Abdul Jabbar Khan, Mumtaz Jakhrani, Zafar Ali Shah, Khuda Bux Joyo, Noor Ali Shah, Javed Rahu, Farooq Faria and others.
