Campbell bursts through pack with sizzling 61

HOUSTON (Texas), Nov 9: Chad Campbell began the day five shots off the pace but burst through the pack with a dazzling 10-under-par 61 to take a one-stroke lead over Charles Howell III after the third round of the Tour Championship on Saturday.

Campbell has made his mark on the PGA Tour this season, finishing second in the PGA Championship at Oak Hill and earning total prize money of $2,832,064, which ranks him ninth on the order of merit.

Campbell was tied for the lead at the PGA Championship earlier this year but eventually had to settle for second place behind Shaun Micheel.

In the first two rounds this week, no one had gone lower than 67. Campbell said he focused on Saturday on playing as well as he had done for the first two days when he shot 70-69.

Campbell said he ignored the fact that birdies on the last two holes would have given him an elusive 59. In fact, he did not even know he was leading until he went for a television interview at the end of the round.

Leading third round scores:

200 Chad Campbell 70 69 61

201 Charles Howell III 67 67 67

203 Retief Goosen (South Africa) 69 67 67, Chris Riley 69 68 66

206 Steve Flesch 71 68 67, Fred Funk 68 67 71

207 Jonathan Kaye 69 70 68, Davis Love III 73 67 67

208 Vijay Singh (Fiji) 73 68 67

209 Jim Furyk 71 71 67, Darren Clarke (Britain) 74 68 67, Chris DiMarco 68 70 71

210 Robert Allenby (Australia) 69 73 68, Kenny Perry 67 73 70
