Sher Mohammad rides home brace of winners

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Nov 9: Scions of the Emirates Farm Jhimpir, completed a splendid hat trick when the Winter Gymkhana Meeting got under way at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

The first winner came through Caesar’s Palace, a three-year-old bay filly from Flaming Arrow out of Singing Time ridden by Naveed, sending the hot favourite Lovely Concept to another disappointing defeat in the opener.

Deniro, a full brother of Caesar’s Palace, having the services of M. Yousuf in the saddle, left the field cold in the third event, beating nearest rival Star Of The Day by two and half lengths.

The hat trick was promptly completed in the fifth race of the afternoon when Innuendo, a three-year-old chestnut filly from Shareek out of Temptation, was ridden to a marvellous victory by Sher Mohammad, beating public fancy Snake Eyed by a comfortable margin of three and half lengths.

The first two winners are the property of Syed Ali Gohar Shah, who along with trainer Talib Hussain had the distinction of ending the afternoon’s programme with a brace of winners.

Innuendo, a speedy chestnut filly is owned by Faisal Farooq, who has a string of highly bred racing horses in his stable.

However, jockey Sher Mohammad was indeed the star of the day, riding home two winners Innuendo in the fifth event, he had an earlier winner in the fourth race when he piloted home Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro’s VII’s two-year-old bay colt Vieto, in a race reserved only for two-year-old Pakistani colts and fillies.

Vieto won the five furlong sprint by a distance, beating Oriental Express and Eager Again, with another Emirates Farm sibling Scarface, completing the frame.

Apart from Sher Mohammed’s brace of winners, he also finished second twice, astride Lovely Concept in the opener and Star Of The Day in the third race and was third astride Captain Crash in the last race of the afternoon.

Young trainer Moheyuddin also had his moments of bliss when he saddled home the dark bay colt Pasban in the second event, humbling the favourite Fantastic Fighter by three and half lengths.

The winner was ridden by Salim Ahmed, who was indeed a picture of happiness, scoring his first winner over here since returning from Dubai.

But without a shadow of doubt, the biggest disappointments of the day came in the fifth and concluding events when the raging favourites Mega Hit and Hoor-e-Mehran respectively met their Waterloo.

Mega Hit finished off the board after being a winner and then second in is last two starts. But worse was to follow in the next race when the raging favourite Hoor-e-Mehran which was backed down for a song at 15/100, never even finished on the board.

The race was bagged by Miss Shahzadi Erum’s dark bay colt Sardar, winning the six furlong engagement in a start to finish bid.

Visitor, chasing the winner throughout the race was second with Captain Crash and Roberto Carlos Fan completing the frame.

Riding boy M. Manzoor astride Hoor-e-Mehran had his license revoked for a month and fined Rs.10,000 for his unsatisfactory performance in the saddle.

The next racing programme is scheduled for Saturday Nov 15.
