KPT, NBP in sight of victory in pool matches

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Nov 9: Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) were in sight of victory in their respective pool C matches of Patron’s Trophy inter-departmental qualifying round cricket tournament.

A five-wicket burst each by pacemen Adeel Malik (5-56) and Wahab Riaz (5-86) helped KPT force Railways to a follow-on, by bundling them out for a paltry 188 in first innings in 42.1 overs at the Railways Stadium.

Earlier KPT declared at 390-6.

Only Afzal Shah (65, six fours, one six, 90 balls) and Adnan Butt (50, seven fours, one six, 53 balls) put up some resistance to the devastating bowling of Adeel and Wahab, However they failed to save Railways from follow-on.

Railways, were once again in trouble after the follow-on as they were 138 for six by close of play, still 64 runs behind to avert an innings defeat, with only four wickets in hand.

Adnan again excelled to serve his team with another fine half- century 69 off 48 balls. He smashed nine fours and three sixes.

Leg-spinner Ali Zafar with four for 28 was the pick of the bowlers in the second innings for KPT.

At LCCA Ground, four wickets haul by paceman Zahid Saeed for 53 runs and three wickets’ contribution by another pacer Aleem Khan Musa for 54 runs, enabled NBP to force Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on follow-on.

The bankers had declared overnight at 444 for seven and bowled out PAF for a total of 200 in 44.4 overs.

Except Rashid Butt (41,six fours) and Aamir Manzoor (31, six fours) no other batsman could contribute a notable score.

At stumps, PAF were 96 for five in 26 overs, still facing the daunting task of scoring 148 runs more to avoid an innings defeat.

Aamir was again batting well at 42, laced with seven boundaries and one six.

Eight-wicket match-haul by paceman Kabir Khan guided Habib Bank Limited (HBL) to earn an emphatic innings and three runs win against Pakistan Education Board (PEB) inside two days at Jinnah Stadium, Gujranwala, according to information received here. Kabir took six wickets for 28 runs in the first innings as PEB slumped at 76 in the first innings in reply to banker’s 345 for four declared in the first innings. Sajid claimed two wickets for 26.

PEB after being made to follow-on were all out in second innings for 266, despite a defiant unbeaten century by Waqas Haroon (104, 105 balls). Waqas did not receive any support from the other end as opener Mohammad Faheem (37) and Haseeb Saghar (31) were the only two prominent scorers.

Kabir took two more wickets for 29 to complete his match haul of eight wickets, to give his side second victory in four matches. Leg-spinner Abdul Rehman claimed three wickets for 63.

Sui Gas declared at 364 for six in first innings and bundled out Leo for 140 in 40 overs to force them on follow-on. Paceman Muhammad Irshad (4-59) and leg-spinner Imran Tahir (4-9) rocked Leo in the first innings as only Hasan Arshad (38) was the key scorer.

In the second innings, Leo displayed a dismal performance as they caved in at 91 in only 29.1 overs. Hasnain Abbas topscored (42).

Paceman Wasim Khan took five wickets for 47 to play a major role in completing the win.

SAGA resumed their first innings at 0 for no loss in reply to ABL’s formidable total of 412. But a five wickets haul by pacer Abdur Rauf for 31 forced them to follow-on by bowling them out for 147 in 44.3 overs.
