Rana’s fiery spell puts Wapda on top

RAWALPINDI, Nov 9: Wapda downed ARL by an innings and 143 runs inside two days at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium to go top of Pool B, Rana Naveedul Hasan emerging as the chief destroyer in this Patron’s Trophy Qualifying Round match on Sunday.

In a fine display, Naveed took five wickets in each innings to wreck ARL who had gone into the match as pool leaders with 18 points.

Wapda after routing ARL for a meagre 70 in the first innings posted 279, Arif Hussain cracking 79 and Adil Nisar scoring 59 runs. Left arm fast bowler Sohail Tanveer captured five wickets for 66 runs and Saad Altaf another pacer snared three for 107.

But ARL as they did in the first innings, collapsed to 66 all out, thanks to Naveed who returned match figures of 10 for 58. Faisal Irfan had three victims while Sarfraz Ahmed claimed two.

PTV were facing the prospects of an innings defeat after being forced to follow on by PTCL on the second day of their game at the KRL Cricket Stadium.

Bowled out for 158 after resuming at the overnight score of 33 for four, PTV were 122 for seven in their second innings, needing another 127 runs to make PTCL bat again.

Rashid Amin did well with the bat in scoring 94 runs in the first innings and after the follow on, was still there at 43 not out.

Muhammad Khalil was the pick of the bowlers, taking four for 38 in the first innings while Muhammad Hussain and Riaz Afridi had two each.

Both Hussain and Afridi then continued to shine picking up three and two wickets respectively leaving PTV in a precarious position.

At the Army Cricket Ground, POF set Army a target of 333 runs for victory going into the last day Monday.

POF had taken a 136-runs first innings lead, dismissing Army for a low 112, Armaghan Elahi inflicting most of the damage with four for 39 and Rashid Latif claiming three for 36.

POF declared their second innings closed at 196 for six, a total that revolved round Ahsan Masud’s fine 77. Capt Ehsan took two wickets for 32 runs.
