KARACHI: Leaking water lines causing shortage

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 9: A considerable quantity of water being supplied from the Hub dam source is being wasted due to a number of leaking pipelines in Orangi Town.

The water leaking from pipelines was not only causing shortages, while, on the other, it was damaging roads and streets, the Orangi Town’s Union Council-9 Nazim, Ms Shehnaz Perveen complained.

“A number of ponds have developed on the main Sharae Orangi and various other streets, owing to water coming out from the leaking pipelines,” she added.

She said that despite reporting the leakages to the KWSB’s Chief Engineer Khalid Malik, executive engineer and assistant engineer concerned on a number of occasions, none of them had, so far, taken measures to plug the leaking pipelines.

She also complained that about 300 to 400 houses in Orangi Town’s Ali Nagar had been receiving contaminated water for the last six months owing to leaking eight-inch dia pipeline but the authorities had not yet bothered to rectify the fault, despite lodging of a number of complaints with the KWSB officials.

She apprehended that an electric pole, situated in the Aziz Nagar, might fall because of persisting damp and muddy conditions caused due to leaking of a nearby 24-inch dia pipeline.

The Nazim demanded of the city Nazim and the KWSB’s managing director to direct the officials concerned to immediately repair all the leaking pipelines in the Orangi Town to help save water as well as the roads from being further damaged.

SUPPLY TO SITE:Following the directives of Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has made arrangements to supply eight million gallons water daily, required by the industries of SITE area, adds PPI.

The industrialists, during governor’s recent visit to the area, had complained about the water shortage.

Mr Ibad, speaking at a meeting called at the Governor’s House to review the arrangements for the supply, said the water required for the industries was hardly two per cent of the water available for the city, and added that the proper water supply would have positive effects on country’s economy.

He also stressed the need of taking measures for reducing water wastage and launching of desalination projects for alternate arrangements of water supply.
