Protest in Malaysia over US warning

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9: Protest mounted in Malaysia against the United States on Sunday for a safety warning to Americans in the country, with one senior minister labelling the advisory an unfair warning.

Najib Razak said the US State Department was wrong to issue the new travel advisory because the situation was safe for foreign tourists.

The US said Friday it was concerned about the safety of its citizens in Malaysia, warning they could fall prey to Southeast Asian terror groups.

It stressed extra caution to American citizens in the troubled eastern Malaysia state of Sabah on Borneo Island.

“It is not for the US State Department to issue the advisory to its citizens which can effect our image to the world especially to foreign tourists.

“Malaysia has taken serious efforts to contain militant activities and this has been proven with our action against groups such as the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI),” he was quoted as saying by the Sunday Star newspaper.—AFP
