LAHORE, Nov 8: A fiercely-competitive handicap card of nine races featuring two cup events and a term race for two-year-old thoroughbreds  highlights the ninth Lahore Winter Meeting to be held on Sunday.

The feature event, the Gujrat Cup, a class I,  II  and  III combined  handicap race to be contested over 1800 metres has a dozen acceptors barring last-minute withdrawals. It looks an open race.

Of the dozen contenders Dizzy Height, Royal Partner, Aegean Daisy and King Of Bhakkar are the form horses.

By virtue of her performance in previous outing the bay mare Dizzy Height, who was beaten by Naseeb on Oct 26 last has an edge over others.

A progeny of Shogun out-of-Bahar-i-Sarwar Dizzy Height finished a good second behind Naseeb over 1600m.

The distance has been increased by 200 metres which should go in her favour and pick up the spoils. The chestnut colt Royal Falcon and grey King Of Bhakkar should be her main challenger.

The four-year old chestnut English Filly Aegean Daisy (Ball Harnbourn-Dizzydaisy) is a cut above in class and pedigree but she is appearing after five months absence from the track. Backers should follow her connections. This will be the eighth race of the day.

The supporting and seventh race, the Wazir Abad Cup, a class IV division I and II combined to have gone over 1600 metres has 14 runners. Mahnoor and Flame attract attention.

The bay colt Ponche (Polinesso-Affifa) on classification and bloodline should have the better of other two, although she is carrying nine stones and one pound weight.

The Neelum Plate, a term race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies, maidens at the time of start, to be contested over the sprinting distance of 1000m looks a wide open affair.

This is an event in which whips are not allowed to be carried by the riders, invites greater interest of race-goers, who love the sport rather than betting on. The results is normally unpredictable in such events. The first race will be held at 11am.
