LAHORE, Nov 8: The provincial executive of the PPP says the government has failed to show any performance during its first year in office after which it is left with little justification to stick to power.
At a meeting held under the chairmanship of Mr Qasim Zia, the participants noted that even Prime Minister Jamali had expressed his dissatisfaction over the working of parliament and seemed to be looking for some justification to get it dissolved.
Information secretary Naveed Chaudhry briefed reporters on the decisions in the presence of Altaf Qureshi, Hafiz Ghulam Mohayuddin, Dr Fakhruddin and Muhammad Ayub.
Mr Jehangir Badar and Altaf Qureshi, through central office-bearers, participated in the meeting at special invitation.
Naveed Chaudhry said his party had always held that the present assemblies were nothing more than what he called orphanages, unable to serve any useful purpose.
Declining to respond to repeated questions if the PPP legislators would think of leaving such useless assemblies, Naveed said his party wanted the government to step down.
It was decided at the meeting that the 37th foundation day of the party would be celebrated with a convention at the Mochi Gate, Lahore, on Nov 30. Party leaders and workers from across the province would participate.
A resolution was adopted to praise incarcerated party leader Asif Zardari for his steadfastness in jail. His immediate release was also demanded.
The media trial of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto was condemned.
The arrest of PML-N leader Javed Hashmi was also slated and the participants demanded the government set him free.
It was noted that the law and order situation had slipped out of the government’s control and the relevant authorities had also failed to control prices of essential items.
A committee was constituted to select a candidate for the Jhang National Assembly seat vacated with the murder of Maulana Azam Tariq.
According to Naveed Chaudhry, Ashraf Sohna has been appointed party’s new president for Okara district while Dr Asad Moazzam will be new head of the Faisalabad city organization. He replaces Ghulam Murtaza Hani Khan, who has been appointed as a member of the Punjab council.
