Styris fined for dissent
GAUHATI (India), Nov 7: New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris has been fined his entire match fee for dissent during Thursday’s one-day game against India after questioning an umpiring decision, team officials said Friday.
International Cricket Council match referee Ranjan Madugalle cut short Styris’ celebrations after he guided New Zealand to a four-wicket victory by summoning him for a late night disciplinary hearing in the eastern town of Cuttack, team officials told The Associated Press.
Styris was reported by the two umpires, England’s Neil Mallender and India’s A.V. Jayaprakash, for questioning the lbw decision against him by Jayaprakash.
Claiming three wickets for 38 runs and then scoring a brisk 68, Styris played a key role in shaping New Zealand’s first win in four matches, keeping alive its chance of making the tri-series final.
He had faced the prospect of a suspension for mouthing obscenities, but his strong disciplinary record, having never violated the code of conduct previously in 68 one-day internationals and seven tests, saved him.
New Zealand team manager Lindsay Crocker attended Madugalle’s disciplinary hearing.
The New Zealand team Friday reached the eastern city of Gauhati, where it plays Australia on Sunday.—AP
