Pakistan stun fancied Norway but slip to 15th place


KARACHI, Nov 6: Pakistan surprised fancied Norway in the Bermuda Bowl-World Bridge Championship in Monte Carlo but slipped to 15th after third day matches, according to message received on Thursday.

Pakistan team, comprising Jan-e-Alam Fazli, Rehman Allana, Sultan Siddiqui, Rashid Jafer, Sarfraz Khan and Tehsin Gheewala are not doing well in the competition against lowly ranked teams but faring better when facing fancied sides.

They first faced Brazil, a lower ranking team and lost 10-20, however they upset fancied Norway 19-11 VPs.

India and Pakistan saw each other in the 10th round and the former had an edge over Pakistan winning 16-14. USA-2 dominated in the 11th round over Pakistan winning 23-7 VPs.

Italy maintained their leadership when play resumed for the third day. Italy beat Canada 19-11 in the 8th round but Bulgaria gave them tough time sharing 30 VPs. China was their next victim when Italy outpaced them 24-6 and further consolidated their position in the 11th round defeating Australia 18-12 VPs.

Another favourite USA-2 first defeated Egypt 18-12 and then added another victory 21-9 against Uruguay- registered two convincing victories in round 10 and 11 round against South Africa 24-6 and Pakistan 23-7.

USA-1 with world renowned players in their lineup, stunned by Indonesia in the 8th round 12-18 but later recovered registering easy victory 25-3 from Bermuda. USA-1 outplayed Sweden 21-9 in the 10th and China 21-9 at the close of the play.

Poland is another fancied team in the championship, but they lost 8th round match to New Zealand 11-19. However, in the 9th round, they had beaten Chinese. Taipei 22-8. Poland defeated Indonesia 17-13 in the 10th and Bermuda 24-6 in the 11th round.

Pakistan seniors had a bye when play resumed for the third day. The team comprises. Tariq Rasheed Khan, Pervaiz Mirza, Rashidul Ghazi, Yousuf Talpur and Hasan Jawad, Abdul Khaliq could not proceed with the team due to his personal reasons.

Seniors played only one match against Italy and had the better of them 16-14.

The Venice Cup, ladies championship, Pakistan team comprises three pairs of Rehana Saigol-Samin Rashid, Zeenat Azwer-Qudsia Dossa and Rubina Agha Roshan Bokhari. They lost 11-19 to USA-I in the sixth, 7-23 to Egypt and shared 30 VPs. equally with Canada in the 8th round playing draw.
