KARACHI: Security guard gets life in murder case

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 6: The additional district and sessions judge, Central, Muhammed Riaz Shaikh, sentenced on Thursday a private security guard to suffer life term for murdering a man.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on Syed Muhammed Tariq, who had shot dead Liaquat Ali on June 5, 1992 within the limits of the Gulberg police.

The convict would have to undergo an additional one-year term in case of default on the payment.

According to prosecution, the victim and his friend, Waheed Mannan, were on their way after having dinner at a roadside hotel in Gulberg. As they passed the security guard talking and laughing, the guard stopped them and accused them of laughing at him.

Tariq opened fire after an altercation with the two friends and, as a result, Liaquat was killed instantly.

The police registered a case against the accused under Section 319 of the Pakistan Penal Code for the accidental death of Liaquat. However, the court tried him under Section 302 of the PPC and found him guilty of having killed the victim intentionally.

NBWS: The additional district and sessions judge, West, Sikandar Ali Lashari, issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of an SHO for not turning up to the court despite repeated notices.

Inspector Hameedullah Khan Niazi was required to appear before the court for his deposition in a murder case against three workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

The workers — Akram alias Preedy, Imran alias Pappu and Mohammed Arif were booked for killing Mohammed Navaid and injuring Mohammed Arshad and baby Hina on January 1, 1998 during violent activities.

Besides, the offences of murder and attempt to murder, the Muttahida men were also charged with violent activities and shootout with the police.

The trial came to a halt due to the continual absence of Inspector Niazi from the court. The judge ordered the Town Police Officer to arrest the SHO and produce him before the court.
