2 ex-Iraqi generals arrested
WASHINGTON, Nov 5: The US military claimed on Wednesday that troops had captured two former Iraqi generals suspected of financing and organizing attacks on occupation forces around Fallujah.
The generals, who were not identified, were seized in a raid in Fallujah on Tuesday by soldiers from the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, the military said in a statement.
In a subsequent raid, soldiers seized a large ammunition cache, including 60mm mortar rounds, rocket-propelled grenades and ammunition for .50 calibre machineguns.
A Pentagon spokesman said the former generals were not on the list of 55 Iraqis “most wanted” by the occupation authorities, but they played significant roles in financing and organizing the armed resistance in and around Fallujah.
“Their importance is that these folks were behind some of the attacks,” said Lt Col Jim Cassella, a Pentagon spokesman.
“Hopefully, it will allow us to roll up some of these groups,” he said. Fallujah is near where armed assailants shot down a US military helicopter on Sunday. —AFP
