KARACHI: 2 more jailed, 113 fined for overcharging


KARACHI, Nov 2: Two fruit sellers found indulged in overcharging were sent to jail whereas 113 others were fined on the same charge on Sunday, according to city government sources.

A total of Rs47,500 were collected as fine from the profiteers, they said.

The sources revealed that action had been taken against 821 shopkeepers since the 1st of Ramazan in the ongoing drive against profiteers and violators of price-control rules. The total amount of fine collected so far during the drive has been put at Rs374,000.

With two more sent to jail on Sunday, the number of those sent behind the bars has risen to four.

Giving details of the action, the administration sources said that the DDO of North Nazimabad, Mushtaq Ahmed, imposed a fine of Rs7,000 on four meat sellers. The DDO of Gulberg, Agha Pervez, also penalized a meat seller, two grocers and five fruit sellers and collected from them an amount of Rs2000 as fine. The DDO of New Karachi, Aurangzeb, imposed a fine of Rs2,000 on two milk sellers.

Seventeen shopkeepers in Liaquatabad Town were found indulged in violation of price-control rules and made to pay a fine of Rs4,700. —APP
