A.R. Rahman scores for Chinese film

MUMBAI, Nov 1: Top Bollywood music director A.R. Rahman has scored the music for a Chinese film that has already been selected for consideration at next year’s Oscars.

“Warriors of Heaven and Earth” was recently released in China and is expected to hit Indian screens by early next year.

Mr Rahman said he decided to get involved in the project after meeting the director He Ping in January.

“He explained the kind of music he wanted. He told me that the score should have layers of music and I started working (on it) in April,” A.R. Rahman told the Hindu newspaper.

“I have been watching Chinese movies for ages and it was interesting to do this project.”

He said the film was set during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) and begins with a dispute between two warriors, a rebellious military official and a soldier following orders. They have to team up to protect a powerful relic of the Lord Buddha.

“The challenge for me was the language,” Mr Rahman said.

“I enjoyed the experience. Whenever I found it difficult to understand the needs of the director then we had a translator.”—AFP
