Sohail, Shahid blast centuries as Pakistan crush BD

KARACHI, Oct 31: Pakistan made a winning star in the Under-19 Asia Cup by overwhelming Bangladesh by 117 runs at National Stadium on Friday due to contrasting hundreds by Sohail Ahmed and Shahid Yousuf and an equally telling spell by leg spinner Mansoor Amjad.

Pakistan raced to a mammoth 291 for five wickets in their 50 overs after electing to bat first. Bangladesh in response were restricted to 174 for nine wickets in 50 overs.

Shahid produced a splendid all-round show in his team’s triumph. He slammed a brilliant 112 and chipped in with three wickets for 36 runs in seven overs with his off-spin to grab the Man of the Match award.

Nizamuddin topscored with 42 with five boundaries and added 59 runs for the second wicket with Naeem Islam, who scored a patient 29 after facing 102 balls for Bangaldesh.

Pakistan recovered after a poor start, losing skipper Khalid Latif for five and Jahangir Mirza for 14. Khalid was caught behind by Shahgir Pavel off paceman Rubaiyat Haq for five. Sohail and Jahangir Mirza added 52 runs for the second wicket before Jahangir was caught at long-off trying to hoist left pacer Aftab Ahmed out of the ground.

But Sohail in company with Shahid changed the complexion of the game by sharing 189-run stand for third wicket in as many balls.

Sohail carried his bat through the entire 50 overs. He was unbeaten on 117 off 154 balls and it was laced with eight boundaries and a six.

Bangladesh bowlers bowled as many as 31 wides in Pakistan innings which compounded their problems.

Shahid was first to reach hundred. But departed soon afterwards, trying to lift slow left arm spinner Nadif Chowdhary. He was well caught by Arafat Sunny at long-on.

Right handed Shahid hit eight boundaries and two sixes in his 112 after facing 101 deliveries.

Bangladesh tried seven bowlers but off-spinner Nadif Chowdhary turned out to be pick of the bowling attack with two wickets for 49 runs in nine overs.
