CHITTAGONG (Bangladesh), Oct 30: Bangladesh failed to come to terms with a probing English pace attack and were struggling to make a fight of the second Test here on Thursday.
Bangladesh were 93-4 in reply to England’s 326 at close on the second day at the M.A. Aziz Stadium.
Rajin Saleh was batting on 24 and Mushfiqur Rahman on 16 after all-rounder Rikki Clarke led the visiting team’s charge with a twin-strike.
Clarke bowled a steady line around the off stump and was on a hat-trick when he removed opener Hannan Sarkar off the last ball of his fourth over and Alok Kapali with the first of his fifth.
Sarkar was adjudged lbw playing across the line and Kapali failed to keep down a short one and gave an easy catch to Mark Butcher in the slips as Bangladesh fell to 63-4.
But Rahman let go the hat-trick delivery, which was pitched outside the off stump.
Clarke’s wickets came after the cheap dismissals of opener Javed Omar and batting mainstay Habibul Bashar.
Omar (2) got a leading edge and was caught by captain Michael Vaughan at cover off new-ball bowler Richard Johnson while Bashar (18) tried to drive a Matthew Hoggard delivery outside the off stump and gave a simple catch to Butcher at third slip.
England also had two other chances late in the day.
Rahman was dropped by Marcus Trescothick at first slip off Hoggard when the score was 85-4 and Nasser Hussain failed to get his hands down in time for a difficult chance from Saleh off Richard Johnson three runs later.
Bangladesh’s seamers too made the most of the helpful conditions as Mashrafe Mortaza returned a career-best haul of 4-60 earlier in the day.
England, overnight 237-4, lost their way early in the second session as Bangladesh made a fine fight back to removed the lower half of the batting-order for a mere 13 runs.
Mortaza took a wicket in each session and all-rounder Rahman scalped two after lunch as England fell from 313-5 to 326 all out 40 minutes before tea.
Mortaza, who had taken the wickets of Vaughan and Graham Thorpe on the first day, kept up his good work to dismiss top-scorer Hussain (76) and Clarke (55).
The two had put on 116 runs for the fifth wicket when Mortaza had Clarke caught at second slip by Sarkar when the batsman had added just two runs to his overnight 53.
That was the only wicket to fall in the first session as Hussain batted on doughtily for a 76 in a 349-minute stay in the middle. His 29th Test half-century came with the help of five boundaries off 256 balls.
He put on 63 runs for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Chris Read, who was the next man out at 37, caught at forward short leg off left-arm spinner Enamul Haque (Junior), after hitting six fours.
Mortaza removed Hussain caught behind in the very next over and then Rahman came on to dismiss Richard Johnson and Ashley Giles.
England are looking to win the two-Test series 2-0 after clinching the first-ever Test between the two countries last week at Dhaka by seven wickets.
The Test series will be followed by a one-day series consisting of three matches.
Meanwhile, England opener Marcus Trescothick will have an X-ray after injuring his thumb while going for a slip catch on the second day.
The 27-year-old hurt his left thumb as he dived to hold on to an edge from Mushfiqur Rahman in the final session, the England team’s media manager said.
The left-hander, who had scored 60 in England’s first innings 326, went off the field immediately and did not return until stumps were drawn.
