CDG calls for ban on kite flying

Published October 31, 2003

LAHORE, Oct 30: The City District Government has proposed a permanent ban on kite flying within a 15 kilometre radius of the heart of the provincial metropolis.

In the recommendations formulated for submission to the Punjab government for amendments in the law on kite flying, the CDG has proposed specification of open spaces like the Lahore Park, Jallo Park and Defence Park for flying kites and provision of public transport facilities to such places to enable the enthusiasts to go there.

The CDG is considering to arrange a kite flying festival at one of the specified parks after Eid to note public response to the proposal. Free public transport will be made available for the people desirous of participation in the festival.

Regulation of the kite flying business has also been proposed with registration of those involved in it.

The CDG has also proposed ban on marketing of metal wire to eliminate chances of electric short-circut and thread exceeding 12 counts, which is capable of cutting throats.

A ban has also been proposed on coating the thread used for flying kites with glass powder as it is capable of cutting throats.

The recommendations have been based on the proposals given by representatives of the stake holders and general public at a one-day seminar held at the Wapda Auditorium recently.

The CDG imposed a ban on flying, production and marketing of kites and thread used for flying the same since July this year following the death of over two dozen people.
