Our Sports Reporter adds from Rawalpindi: Former Test opener Ali Naqvi gave KRL great start on Monday striking a blazing century as his side put on 274 on the first day of their Patron’s Trophy qualifier against Wapda at the Rawalpindi Stadium.

Runs just flowed from Naqvi’s willow as he dispatched 17 hits to the ropes with one six in scoring a well deserved 112 that came off 181 deliveries.

Naqvi was involved in a 100-run stand for the first wicket with Muhammad Ramzan, who scored 23 runs, as the two batsmen laid foundations for a good total.

Wapda bowlers led by Farooq Iqbal, who had four scalps, however ensured that things did not get out of hand. In restricting their rivals, Kashif Raza also played his part snapping up three for 41 with Rana Naveed claiming two victims.

In another qualifier not too far away, all-rounder Muhammad Hussain cracked an incredible 113-ball 115, an innings that propelled PTCL to a mammoth 391 against Army at the Army Cricket Ground.

Hussain, PTCL’s star for the day, hammered 10 fours in his innings. Also doing well with the bat was Asher Zaidi who scored 66, a knock that featured nine boundaries, and Sheraz Khalid whose contribution was 64 runs.

Slow left arm bowler Zubair Wattoo with seven for 154 was Army’s main wicket-taker but gave away just too many runs.

At the close of play, Army were 39 for one with Ehsan Ali at the crease on 20. Muhammad Hussain took the only wicket for only three runs.

Elsewhere, ARL took a six-run first innings lead against PTV to finish the first day of their match at their home ground on 184 for two.

Yasir Arafat Junior stood firm having scored an unbeaten 70 while Afaq Rahim hit 71 runs as ARL finished the day in a happy position.

Earlier, their bowlers spearheaded by Alamgir Khan who had figures of four for 59, dismissed PTV for 178 in only 54 overs.

Had it not been for half centuries scored by Fayyaz Ahmed and Rashid Amin Butt, the PTV total would have been all the more poorer.
