MUZAFFARABAD, Oct 27: Demonstrations were staged all over the Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Monday as a mark of protest on the 56th anniversary of the Indian army’s invasion and occupation of parts of Kashmir.

Protests were organized on the call of the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference, marking Oct 27 as black day to remind the world community that the people of Kashmir did not accept their subjugation at the hands of New Delhi and wanted to live in a repression-free atmosphere.

In Muzaffarabad, around 500 people participated in a rally that culminated at the office of the United Nations Military Observers Group where a memorandum was delivered.

The memorandum called upon the UN to implement its resolutions on Kashmir and hold a fair plebiscite to determine the future status of the Himalayan region in accordance with the aspirations of its people.

Demonstrators, including students and government servants, wore black arm-bands as a mark of protest and chanted anti-India and pro-freedom slogans during the march.

Earlier, leaders from different parties, including AJK minister for forests Mufti Mansoorur Rehman and secretary-general of the APHC’s AJK chapter Ghulam Mohammad Safi, termed India’s occupation of Kashmir unlawful and described it as being unacceptable to the Kashmiris.

Speakers criticized India for occupying parts of the Muslim- majority state, reminding the world community that the instrument of accession had no legitimacy in the face of the popular support for joining Pakistan, adding that the document signed by Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh had also been negated by historical facts.
