New water reservoirs needed: Wapda

By Our Staff Correspondent

QUETTA, Oct 27: Water and Power Development Authority Chairman Zulfiqar Ali Khan has said that the government is making all possible efforts for developing water reservoirs as it is indispensable for boosting the agriculture sector.

Speaking to the people and elders of Zhob during inspection of the site of the Subakzai Dam, he said water reservoirs were necessary for agriculture development in the far-flung areas.

He said the Subakzai dam would play an important role in the development of the district and provide job opportunities to local people.

He said roads and buildings were being constructed in the area under the project. He said the people affected by the dam project would be given full compensation in three phases.

He said Wapda would spend Rs84 million on the provision of electricity to the Karez Qamaruddin area.

An official informed the Wapda chairman that the project would cost Rs1.1 billion and its catchment would comprise 270 square miles.

The chairman said Wapda was also working on other water reservoirs, including the Mirani dam and the Kachhi canal.

He said that with the completion of the Kachhi canal project, over 700,000 acres would be cultivated in Balochistan and it would produce 100kw electricity.

The project would provide potable water to 15,000 people and produce 80 tons of fish, he said. The chairman directed the authorities concerned to accelerate the pace of work.

He also visited the Zhob grid station with water board member Chaudhry Mohammad Amin.
