KARACHI, Oct 26: The body of Yasmeen Faizee, 37, who committed suicide in jail, was handed over to one of her relatives on Saturday afternoon by Edhi Foundation.
An official of the foundation said that Amir Siddiqui, brother of Tanveer Siddiqui, received the body from the Edhi morgue for final rites. Tanveer, the complainant in the double murder case, was brother-in-law of the deceased Yasmeen Faizee.
Yasmeen, the under-trial prisoner, who was being tried in a court for allegedly killing her parents, hanged herself in the Central Prison of Karachi on Oct 23.
Jail police claimed that Yasmeen went to use a washroom where she hanged herself with a string of her trouser (shalwar).
Her body was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi for the postmortem examination and later kept with the Edhi morgue.
Yasmeen, allegedly stabbed her parents to death in their apartment in the Defence Housing Authority on Nov 12, 2002.
According to police, Adnan had divorced Yasmeen in 1996 and since then she had been upset. After she got divorce, her parents bought a flat for her in the close proximity of their residence in Sobia Arcade DHA-V, near Deltons Departmental Store, where she started living.
The police said that in the morning of Nov 12, Yasmeen’s mother Sajada Begum, aged 55, gave her Rs2,200, for her Eid shopping. Instead of buying a new dress, she was accused of purchasing a dagger. She came to her parents’ home shortly before sunset (Iftar) and attacked her father Abu Nasar Faizee, 65, with the dagger. She repeatedly stabbed him in the chest, abdomen and legs. He died on the spot.
Having killed her father she attacked her mother the same way, the police findings showed.
When she attacked her parents her sister-in-law and a maidservant were at home. Yasmeen’s sister-in-law tried to save the old couple but failed and suffered minor injuries.
She, along with the maidservant, locked herself in a room and raised alarm through a room’s window. The shopkeepers believed that dacoits entered the house and informed police on 15.
She tried to hide the weapon and flee the house, but the police arrested Yasmeen with dagger.
Yasmeen told the police that her parents had played a role in getting her divorced. She denied the charges for killing her parents but said they deserved the same fate. Police believed Yasmeen was mentally ill.
