KARACHI, Oct 25: Nawroz Ali J. Bhamani Memorial Cup to be run over six furlongs will be the main attraction of the Karachi Winter Gymkhana races which will be held on Sunday. The day’s proceedings will begin at 12 moon.
Of the 18 horses who will parade to the starting gate Trillion Winner, Your Honour, Lover’s Lady, Innuendo and Saligna are the form horses. Of the lot Trillion Winner is the most prized contender.
Though he is still not in the pink of condition should put up a improved run to steal the day’s honour. His real threat will be Lover’s Lady, a more seasoned campaigner. She had run a very good fourth behind Visitor, Khasul Khas and Love U Lady about a month back.
With all the three horses who had finished ahead of her now running in upper class Lover’s Lady has a very good chance of giving a tough time to my fancy. Your Honour, Innuendo and Saligna should fight for lower berths.
The Managing Committee of the Karachi Race Club which had suspended the licence of rider M. Barani for three months on Keen Winner reconsidered their decision and he will be riding today. But they did not reconsider the case of Salim Ahmad whose licence was suspended for unsatisfactory riding on Dur-e-Yemen who won a week later.
Dur-e-Yemen was piloted home by M. Nasir who is definitely a better rider. His case also deserved reconsideration. Another rider who is undergoing punishment is Ashiq Ali who was suspended on August 31 and since then even top rider of the town, Shahzad failed to pilot her to victory. Aashiq Ali’s punishment deserves reconsideration.
The race club stewards have a rather ticklish job at hand if they want to improve racing. Owners who have more than one entry in a particular race have started making false bets in the betting ring. Once they lay their bets on any one horse the price of the other stable entry goes up and then the same owner lays heavy bet at bigger odds.
Owners or resourceful people and can afford to make false bets but the patrons of the turf generally cannot afford to lay two bets in one race.
The club staff keeps a note of the odds and the stewards can very easily read the fluctuations and change the riders if they find any unusual fluctuation. But it all needs honesty and will to improve racing.
Horse owners with the connivance of the bookmakers cannot be allowed to befool the race goers every day.
Bang Man, Silent Fire, Daru are the chance horses. On his Wednesday’s run Bang Man should have edge over Silent Fire while classy Winning Streak can hack the field if on job in the first race.
Dauntless, Sivler City, Sajan Black, and Law Of Nature are the form horses in the second race. Sajan Black showed signs of return of form on Wednesday by finishing third behind stable mate Pearl and Dauntless. If he reproduces the same run should have the better of Dauntless.
Sher Zai, Royal Beauty, Trust Me, Pearl and Fizza are the pick in the fourth race. Pearl on an impressive race on Wednesday. With that run in mind I would like himto make it two in a row.
Star Of The Day, Ring Master, Nawab, Sonia, Yaqoob Choice and Shining Steel are the form horses. The last named is quality horse and with the blessings of the stable should have no difficulty in beating the present lot.
The connections of Nawab and Sonia on Wednesday pulled a fast one on the racegoers when Sonia was backed first and when the price of Nawab swelled up to three to one, he came in for heavy betting and duly obliged the connections whereas Sonia trailed the field.
Thousand Upwho recorded a very impressive win on Wednesday should win the sixth race despite the fact that he has gone up in the weights.
As his movements were too good to be ignored. Departure On Time. Auzy, and Gold Tip should fight for less remunerative berths.
In the eighth race Wonder Thunder, Hoor-e-Mehran, The New Champion, Dur-e-Yemen and Perfect Smile are the form horses. Perfect Smile a thorough bred three-year-old has two straight wins to her credit. On those runs, I would like her to make it three in a row. The only surprise can come from Hoor-e-Mehran who does not have a proper try run to her credit.
In the concluding event of the day, Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro has two entries in Lady’s Love and Love U Lady.
On classification Lady’s Love is better but since she will be carrying crushing weight of 9-8 on handicap Love U Lady should be the obvious choice and our fancy.
Lady’s Love is also capable of upsetting the calculations as she is too good for this class. Charkh Bareen and Gambling Girl would relish the seven furlong journey but will find Pir Pagara’s nominee hard nut to crack.
