LAHORE, Oct 25: National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (NUCES) chancellor Senator Waseem Sajjad has said that developments in science and technology through the medium of higher learning institutions are essential for human as well as national independence.

Speaking at the first convocation of NUCES here on Saturday, he said the nation was still groping around for an effective formula for sustained growth. “We are also looking for our own cultural and religious values to channelize this growth.”

He said that the higher learning institutions should contribute towards self-reliance. Human resource development and development in science and technology were major steps towards self-reliance. He advised the graduates to perform not only for their own sake but for the betterment of millions of their fellow citizens.

Mr Sajjad said a small group of people had established the Foundation for Advancement of Science and Technology (FAST) in 1980, which had recorded significant progress. He said that higher education institutions’ sights and ambitions should correspond to the need for overall development of the country, both in economic and social terms. “Let us all now brace ourselves for the challenges ahead and prove to the outside world that we never falter even against the worst of odds.”

NUCES Rector Dr Ameer Muhammad said the university had upheld merit in all activities of the university especially in granting admissions and awarding grades.

He said that the poor talented students who qualified university’s entrance tests were being supported. This year, he said, the university provided financial assistance of Rs20 million to some 300 needy students.
