KARACHI, Oct 24: Sindh Education Minister Irfanullah Marwat on Friday informed that the provincial government has established an endowment fund with Rs 1 billion for provision of scholarships to needy and deserving female students to increase rate of literacy among women in Sindh.
“The Sindh government is far more concerned about increase in female literacy rate in the province and special attention is being accorded to facilitate female students in rural and urban areas in the province”, he said while speaking at a prize-distribution ceremony at DJ Science College, Karachi.
Federal education secretary Syed Shafqat Hussain Shah, Punjab education minister Hussain Jehanian Gardezi, Sindh education secretary Ghulam Ali Shah Pasha and EDOs (education) of Karachi were also present.
Mr Marwat lauded the efforts of the department in holding the spots events, extracurricular activities and science exhibitions and said huge scholarships are being provided to over 200 students in Sindh.
“We believe in outstanding rewards for outstanding students and in this regard, 200 students are getting Rs25,000 each annually for their education”, he said and added that other extraordinary steps are being taken to boost literacy in the province.
He said curricula are being revised, schools are being established and teachers training is being arranged to improve standard of education in the province.
Earlier, Punjab Minister for Non-formal Literacy Hussain Jehanian Gardezi lauded the Sindh government for establishing the fund for provision of scholarships to female students and said Sindh has set an example for other provinces.
He said Sindh was considered as a province where education is given least priority but the efforts of present provincial government indicate that it is striving hard for maintaining educational standard of the province.
Sindh education secretary Ghulam Ali Shah Pasha in his welcome address talked about poor standard of technical institutions in the province and informed that efforts were under way for provision of scientific equipment and hiring of teachers at these institutions.
He disclosed that establishment of scientific and technical labs was under consideration at secondary schools so that passing out students could have some technical training and they could earn respectable livelihood after getting education.
