Tri-series opener abandoned

CHENNAI (India), Oct 23: Heavy rain forced the opening one-day triangular series tie between India and New Zealand to be abandoned on Thursday.

The teams were awarded three points each after a damp start to the tournament, also featuring Australia.

Electing to bat in the day-night fixture, India had reached 141 for three wickets in 26.5 overs when steady rain forced the players off the field.

The umpires finally abandoned the match after continuous drizzle ruled out further chances of play.

Sachin Tendulkar was 48 not out after an untypically subdued effort, having raised 48 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket with left-hander Yuvraj Singh (29) to lift India from 93-3 in the 16th over.

India next play Australia in Gwalior on Sunday. Teams play each other three times in the group stage with the final set for Kolkata on Nov 18.
