Profitable day for outsiders at Karachi races

By Ali Kabir

KARACHI, Oct 22: Outsiders held upper hand at the Karachi Winter Gymkhana mid-week races held here this afternoon at the local turf.

Pearl in the third race, Trust You in the fourth and Deniro in the sixth race were the only horses who were backed with confidence by the racegoers.

Deniro was preferred by the stable over Shining Steel but the betting ring gave early indicators and the followers of form did not have to play the guessing game.

The most disappointing runs were produced by Arabian Majesty in the fifth race and Departure on Time in the concluding event of the day.

Both the first favourites backed heavily by the knowledgeable racegoers were ridden by the top local jockey Shahzad.

On both the occasions, Shahzad showed poor judgement of pace and failed to show his skill on Arabian Majesty who raced neck and neck with Star Of The Day all along in the straight.

Sher Mohammad on the other hand who was astride Star Of The Day showed cool and held his nerves to guide his charge to victory.

Besides these two, the connections of Sonia, Reliable and Grey Boy of late have started giving signals which are detrimental for fair racing. In fact the use of mobile phones is now being abused by the owners who change orders at the gates.

Nowhere in the world mobile phone is allowed and specially the licencees just cannot carry it inside the race club premises.

But at the Karachi Race course now every rider, trainer, even syces are seen carrying mobile phone for last minute instructions from the proper quarters.

It has been noticed that some bookmakers who own horses get their horses tried or pulled at the last minute depending on the betting.

If some of their horses are backed heavily by the followers of form they seldom run on merit.

The stewards also make full use of the mobile phones when they gather the last minute information from the riders at the last minute and lay their bets accordingly.

This is a crime in the racing world which is committed every day and in every race.

On Sunday the stewards suspended young M. Barani for his unsatisfactory riding on Keen Winner who did not stand any handicap chance.

It was simply a reaction as the proper quarters had fancied the horse to earn a place.

If Barani’s licence can be suspended for hooking his charge what the stewards have to say about the running of Innuendo on Sunday and the running of Departure on Time and Arabian Majesty today.

Because of these unfair tactics, races are held two to two and half hour behind schedule.

Today it was so dark in the last race that the photo finish camera was not operative. It is a daily routine.

The delays are there just because all the manipulators join hands and it needs time.

The day’s honour went to owner trainer Talib Husain who sent out Silver City in the opener and Deniro in the sixth race.

Next Gymkhana races will be held on Sunday Oct 26.
