HYDERABAD: Demo held against water projects

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Oct 22: Activists of the Sindhi Hari Committee, led by its president Azhar Jatoi, Mohammad Usman Laghari, Pandhi Khan Zaur and Mohammad Ismail Jatoi, held a protest demonstration against the Kalabagh dam and the Thal canal in the Chambar town here on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Azhar Jatoi said fertile lands of the province would be rendered barren if the water projects were constructed.

He, however, said peasants of Sindh would not allow the government to construct the projects.

He called upon the people to unite on one platform against what he called anti-Sindh projects.

Meanwhile, the district administration and the police are reported to have granted permission for holding the public meeting against the disputed water projects in Hyderabad.

The sub-committee of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee, at a meeting held at the residence of Abrar Qazi here on Tuesday, discussed arrangements for the meeting at the Haider Chowk.

The meeting was informed that besides leaders of the anti-Thal canal committee, Awami National Party leader Asfandaryar Wali, Dr Abdul Hayee Baloch and Punjab People’s Party Parliamentarians president Kazim Zia would also speak at the Hyderabad public meeting.

The meeting was attended by PPP leader Maula Bux Chandio, Awami Tehrik leader Dr Nazeer Shaikh, Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Afzal Gujjar, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F leader Maulana Taj Mohammad Nahyoon, Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party leader Muzaffar Kalhoro and Sindh National Front leader Ayub Shar.
