KARACHI, Oct 21: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad on Tuesday directed that effective action be taken against elements involved in profiteering and anti-social activities during the month of Ramazan.
A meeting held under his chairmanship at the Governor’s House decided to take various steps for providing facilities to people in the holy month.
The governor directed that prices of fruits and vegetables be publicised daily, and those of other eatables on a weekly basis. In this regard he stressed regular monitoring and checking, and on-the-spot fines on violators.
The meeting was informed that magisterial powers were being delegated to one official in every town and due punishment would be awarded in case of undue profit-making and supply of substandard items. It was further said that during Ramazan milk would be available at Rs22 per litre and flour at Rs10 per kg.
The meeting was told that in the city 40 complaint centres had been established where police would be deployed and immediate action would be taken for redress of complaints; in Karachi two more bachat bazaars would be organized in every town.
The governor issued special directives for better sanitary arrangements and completion of road-repair works on emergency basis before the start of the holy month.
He emphasized effective traffic control arrangements before Iftar and on the occasion of Eid shopping, and underlined the need for emergency planning and adoption of measures in the light of previous experiences.
The governor said that during this sojourn people must not be harassed.
He told the IGP to take special measures for monitoring the working of policemen deployed at different places.
Dr Ibad directed that a special cell be established at the Governor’s House for monitoring the steps taken. He said that officials posted at the cell would continuously monitor the situation through visits, inspections and other modes of liaison with the people, and keep the governor informed.
The meeting was attended by senior minister Syed Sardar Ahmed, minister for food Arif Mustafa Jatoi, chief secretary Dr Mutawakkal Kazi, city Nazim Naimatullah Khan, principal secretary Brig Akhtar Zamin, the IGP, the DCO Karachi, the city police chief, the home secretary, the finance secretary, secretary for food and other officials.
EDUCATION: Presiding over another meeting the governor called for immediate enforcement of a code of conduct in educational institutions in the province to maintain a conducive academic environment.
He called for establishment of committees at every level for enforcement of the code of conduct and to end outside interference in educational institutions. The meeting decided to have wall-chalkings, posters etc removed from all educational institutions.
The meeting was attended by home secretory Anwar Hyder, home advisor Aftab Shaikh, chief secretary Dr Mutawakkal Kazi, Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan, principal secretary Akhtar Zamin, the IGP, the city police chief and other officials.—APP
