Outsider Dur-e-Yemen wins Gul Dada Cup

By Ali Kabir

KARACHI, Oct 19: Mr Faisal Farooq’s Dur-e-Yemen caused the biggest upset of the day when he produced vast improvement in less than a week to win the Gul Mohammad Dada Memorial Cup at the Karachi Winter Meeting held here on Sunday at the local turf.

Dur-e-Yemen only on last Monday had failed to figure even on the board, under Salim Ahmad while M. Nasir, last year’s champion jockey who was engaged by the stable after taking on the running in the straight toyed with the field.

After the race the stewards suspended the licence of Salim Ahmad for one year and fined him Rs 20,000 but they failed to take into consideration the running of Dur-e-Yemen’s stable mate, Innuendo who remained first favourite in the betting ring and failed to even figure on the board.

The handling of Innuendo by Jockey Shahzad, the Blue eyed boy of the Chairman of the Karachi Race Club too was suspicious but the people sitting in the glass house did not even care to call Shahzad up for questioning his handling of the firm favourite. If Salim Ahmad’s charge was guilty of in-and-out running, the same was the case of Innuendo who had won a very good race on Monday.

If one horse was guilty of producing improved run, the other from the same stable was guilty of producing putrid run. This was a clear case of double standard by the people sitting in the glass house. Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro had a lucrative double through Love U Lady and Lady’s Love in the last two races. Both his nominees won comfortably, Specially the winning of Love U Lady was remarkable as the filly defied the heavy impost of 9-7 and won unextended. Her main contenders The New Champion and Edging Ahead were guilty of showing no interest in any part of the race, specially Edging Ahead who remained almost a back marker all along the six furlong journey.

Ceaser’s Palace won the opening event in a common canters proving his class but the running of Trust You was suspicious as the connections put faith in stable mate Trust Me who could not make any impression on Ceaser’s Palace.

After the withdrawal of Fantastic Fighter in the second race the stewards had to order re-betting which spoiled the gamble on Arabian Majesty. Nawab rubbed salt in the wounds of Arabian Majesty’s supporters by succeeding in run away tactics.

In the third race Mr Edward Chow’s Yaqoob Choice, ridden by Shahid Mannan was beaten once again by Auzy who was backed by the connections at long odds.

Prized colt Trillion Winner won the fourth race hands down showing glimpses of his bloodline.

The day’s riding honour went to Sher Mohammad who piloted home both of Pir Pagara’s nominees. Their victory enabled trained Mumtaz Ali to steal the honour of saddling a brace of winners. The next races will be held on Wednesday, October 22.
