Former ISI chief calls for probe

Published October 20, 2003

LAHORE, Oct 19: The former director-general of the ISI, Lt-Gen (Retd) Hameed Gul, has urged the government to set up a joint inquiry team to probe into October 15 clash between police officials and armymen.

He was talking to newsmen at the marriage ceremony of Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani’s nephew here on Sunday.

He quoted some rules under which whenever a dispute between police and army occurred, a joint commission comprising senior officers of both the forces was formed to fix responsibility.

He said though army officers were allowed to use tinted glass, they should prefer abiding by the law of the land.

Lt-Gen (Retd) Hameed Gul said he, too, carried an authority letter to the effect but he had never used it.

Senator S.M. Zafar said the incident depicted a clash between duty and culture of society.

Lt-Gen (Retd) Hameed Gul said duty should be given priority in all cases.
