It’s an achievement, says Musharraf: OIC’s acceptance of proposal
ISLAMABAD, Oct 18: President General Pervez Musharraf on Saturday said the OIC summit’s adoption of Pakistan’s proposal on the formation of a commission for restructuring the 57-member organization was an achievement for the whole Muslim world.
“It is an achievement not only for us but the entire Muslim world that we have decided on establishing a commission to look into the affairs of the Ummah and to give proposals for restructuring the OIC. I think it is a victory for the whole Muslim world,” he told newsmen on return from Malaysia. Gen Musharraf said it was accepted in totality that the commission would submit its proposals in one year at a special OIC summit to be held next year.
He said it was now up to member countries to come out with proposals for restructuring the OIC and added that Pakistan had a lot of ideas in this respect.
The president was glad that his call for enlightened moderation was acknowledged and said he was grateful to the OIC leaders for recognizing Pakistan’s stand.
“Certainly, it is a recognition of the hardwork of the entire Pakistani team, and also that I was asked to represent the Asian Group for vote of thanks at the end of the summit. These are important events, we are grateful.”
Answering a question, he said the summit reaffirmed its support for Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. “The OIC countries do support the Kashmir stand. We held a meeting of the OIC Contact Group where members expressed their unanimous support.” However, the president said, the Muslim countries should individually express “more overt” support for the Kashmiris.—APP
