PESHAWAR, Oct 17: The Frontier government is set to table the proposed draft act for the upgradation of Khyber Medical College (KMC) to medical university in the next cabinet’s meeting, official sources said.

“The proposed draft act has been finalized and submitted to the government to be presented before the cabinet for approval,” said a doctor, who is part of the committee that has drafted the act.

According to him, the government has allocated Rs20 million to upgrade the medical college.

Established in 1954, the institution operated under the University of Peshawar till its takeover by the provincial government in 1975.

It was due to the apathy of the successive government that the college could not be given the university status, despite the announcements of two former prime ministers.

Senior professors argue that the medical would not have suffered academic decay, had it been accorded the status of university.
