Pakistan capable of beating any team: Miandad

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Oct 15: Pakistan cricket coach Javed Miandad claimed on Wednesday that he did not consider South Africa as very tough opponents and unbeatable.

“Our boys have the potential to beat South Africa. I believe Pakistan has the talent to upset any team” Miandad said while talking to Dawn  on Wednesday.

Pakistan face South Africa in the first Test on Friday at Lahore.

Miandad remarked that although Proteas had an edge over Pakistan after winning the ODI series, “we will go all out to win the Test series and it is possible.”

He stressed that Moin Khan’s inclusion in the team was necessary as he was the best available choice after Rashid Latif, ruled himself out for the Test series.

“Moin will also strengthen the batting department and I hope as wicket-keeper he will show his talent again”, Miandad added.

Asked to comment on Shaun Pollock’s  statement that South Africans were favourites to win the Test series, Miandad commented “let’s see what happens “.

On Inzamam missing out the Test due to fitness problems the coach stated that it was unavoidable as no one could  do any thing if a player was injured.

When pointed out that Pakistan has picked three spinners in 16-member squad which showed that spin-friendly wicket was in the offing, Miandad countered that the selection of number of spinners could not indicate the type of pitch.

Commenting on the inclusion of opener Imran Farhat and Faisal Iqbal, Miandad went on to say that this was a great and ideal opportunity for all the youngsters to show their mettle and consolidate their places in the team.
