England’s rain-hit match drawn

DHAKA, Oct 14: The rain-interrupted first match of England’s cricket tour ended in a draw on Tuesday after the visitors failed to capture the last wicket of the Bangladesh Cricket Board President’s XI.

The Bangladesh side reached 143 for nine in their second innings at close of play.

England had earlier bundled them out for a first-innings 57 after they resumed on an overnight 46 for six.

But instead of enforcing the follow-on, England who had scored 253 in their first innings, decided to send in Graham Thorpe and Rikki Clarke to open and get some batting practice.

Thorpe scored 47 and England declared after Clarke was out for 19, giving them a lead of 265.

Matthew Hoggard, who put England in command taking three wickets for 11 runs on Monday, destroyed Bangladesh’s first innings in only 33 minutes taking a total of six wickets for 13 runs.

The home side showed more nerve in the second innings, particularly Aftab Ahmed who hit 45 runs in 74 balls with four fours and six off Clarke to hold up the England bowlers for a while.
