Ditthim captures girls crown

ISLAMABAD, Oct 11: Second seed Punjaporn Ditthim of Thailand captured the girls singles crown toppling India’s Shweta Kakhandki in the second leg of the ITF International Juniors Tennis Championship at the Islamabad Club on Saturday.

Ditthim, who won 6-4, 6-2 was in excellent form and played a powerful game from the baseline that kept Shweta on the defensive.

She maintained the same kind of pressure in the second set too and raced to a 4-0 lead by hitting cross court winners.

She eventually took the set and the match by breaking the first and fourth games of her opponent. The victory earned Ditthim 30 ITF points.

Top seed Rupesh Roy and Sumit Gupta of India annexed the boys doubles title by defeating fellow countrymen Vivek Shokeen and Nishindaran Sivendran in well-fought three-set match despite losing the first set.

But they roared back in great style to annext the next two sets with ease to emerge worthy winners.

The Indian duo won 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, their consistent game forcing their rivals to make unforced errors at crucial stages of the match.

Pakistani pair Shahzad and Wasif Cheema were beaten in the semifinal on Thursday.

The boys singles final between Pakistan’s Shahzad Khan and India’s top seed Rupesh Roy will be played on Sunday.

Boys doubles final: Rupesh Roy-Sumit Gupta (Ind) bt Vivek Shokeen (Ind)-Nishindaran Sivendaran (Sri) 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
