Zahid cracks century as Mansoor captures six wickets

KARACHI, Oct 8: Zahid Ghauri hammered a superb century to help KCCA Zone-III score 275 in their first innings against Zone-VI on the first day of the two-day fixture in the PCB Inter-district Cricket Tournament on Wednesday.
Zahid made 109 before being run out and shared in a second-wicket partnership of 135 with opener Agha Sabir, who contributed 77 in their match at the TMC Ground.
Off-spinner Irfanuddin was of the pick of Zone-VI bowlers with fine figures of five for 75 in 20.4 overs. Pacer Imran Javed claimed two for 46.
Zone-VI replied with 11 for one at close of play.
Zone-I made the highest total of the day, reaching 320 for eight in their allotted 90 overs against Zone-V at the Landhi Gymkhana Ground.
Rashid Ali (69 not out), Talha Khan (67), Wasim Naeem (63) and Shahid Dawood (53) were principal run-getters.
Zone-V made 49 for one in response.
Good batting by opener Naumanullah (66, nine fours) and all-rounder Atif Raza (an unbeaten 69, fours) guided Zone-II to 293 in 88.1 overs in their fixture against Zone-VII at the Asifabad Sports Ground.
Naveed Khan (43, seven fours), Shahid Aslam (42, seven fours) and Imranullah (33, four fours) were the major contributors for Zone-II.
Leg-spinner Mansoor Ahmed clinched the bowling honours by picking up six wickets for 100 in 36.1 overs while speedster Sharif Asadullah captured three for 68 in 18 overs.
By stumps, Zone-VII had safely negotiated five overs to reach 23 without loss.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Islamabad: Asif Ali smashed a quickfire 63 laced with eight boundaries as Jhelum hit up a decent 252 against Rawalpindi at the Army Cricket Ground in Rawalpindi.
Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, Jhelum were also helped by a fine innings of 42 by Wasim Saeed and Qasim Maqbool’s 32.
Iftikhar Mahmood and Munir Ansari, bowling to a good line and length, took three wickets each while Najaf Shah had to be content with two.
When bad light stopped play with 11.2 overs still to be bowled, Rawalpindi were nine for no loss in 3.4 overs.
Elsewhere, Islamabad fought back against Attock at the Shalimar Cricket Ground.
Thanks to Rauf Akbar’s 49 and a valuable 39 from Raheel Majeed, Islamabad were able to put on 219. They were restricted by left-arm spinner Nadeem Ahmed who snared six for 60 in an impressive display. Muhammad Waseem had three scalps for 51 runs.
Islamabad then bounced back to leave Attock at 27 for three, Rao Iftikhar claiming two for 30 and Rauf Akbar picking up one.
At the KRL Ground in Rawalpindi, Chakwal scored 213, Awais Zia top-scoring with 48 and Akhtar Abbas hitting 43 in their game against Azad Jammu Kashmir. Mir Usman Ali was the chief wicket-taker with five for 66.
AJK had scored 140 for three when play ended for the day. Afaq Raheem stroked 74 runs.

Our Sports Correspondent adds from Lahore: Off-spinner Salman Qadir (5-51) and paceman Farooq Raza (3-34) restricted East Zone Blues to 128 in their first innings against East Zone Blues at the Mughalpura Institute Ground.
But off-spinner Mohammad Altaf then claimed five for 46 as East Zone Blues were bowled out for 154 in reply.
An unbeaten 101 by Waqar Ahmed and equally fine knock of 85 by Zia-ur-Rehman steered West Zone Whites to a healthy first innings’ total of 344 against North Zone Whites at the Model Town Club Ground.
Waqar slammed 12 fours in his 101-ball innings while Zia hit 10 boundaries as the pair added 198 for the fourth wicket.
Propelled by half-centuries from Taufiq Umar (79) Kamran Sajid (64), Ashfaq Ahmed (56) and Rana Aun Ashraf (52), North Zone Blues amassed 327 for five in 75 overs against East Zone Whites at the LCCA Ground.

Our Correspondent adds from Abbottabad: Swat were 26 for one in reply to Abbottabad’s first innings 212 in their Pool ‘C’ match at the newly-constructed Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.
Play was halted 40 minutes before the scheduled close of play because of bad light.
After being sent into bat, Abbottabad failed to capitalise on a brilliant knock of 59 by Rashid Taj, who hit five boundaries and a couple of sixes.
Jamaluddin bowled well to take four for 25 in 16 overs.
