KARACHI, Oct 7: The University of Karachi on Tuesday cancelled admissions of some 17 students, who had allegedly provided forged or tempered intermediate and matriculation marks certificates to get admissions in the varsity.

The admissions were cancelled after verification of students’ documents from the boards of intermediate and secondary education, both of which confirmed that the marks certificates submitted by these students were either forged or tempered with.

A varsity official said the cancellation of illegal admissions was part of KU’s campaign against irregularities in examination, enrolment and finance departments.

Many officials from these departments had been transferred to less important posts and inquiries against them were underway for further action, the KU official further informed.

He said that scrutiny of documents was underway, adding more cases of ill-gotten admissions were expected to be unearthed.

However, ruling out the possibility of registration of cases or imposition of penalty on these students for seeking admissions through unfair means, he said cancellation of admissions was enough.

As the KU does not issue any second or waiting list of candidates, who applied for admissions, the seats remain vacant for the rest of the academic year in case of admission cancellation.

The students, whose admissions have been cancelled, are, Syed Fahad Jamal, s/o syed Jamal Ahmed, Physics Department, Habibullah, s/o Saadullah, Chemistry Department, Syed Ali Qamber rizvi, s/o Syed Ali Kauser Rizvi, Applied Chemistry Department, Lubna Khaliq Abid, d/o Abdul Khaliq Abid, General History Department, Nosheen d/o Syed Ishrat Ali, Pharmacy Department, Ghayas Ahmed Khan, s/o Rahmat Khan, Physics Department, Mohammad Kashif, s/o Noor Mohammad of Bio-Technology Department, Sultan Shahbaz Zaman Khan, s/o shafiq uz Zaman Khan, Mathematics Department, Agha Zulfiqar Haider, s/o Agha Safder Mirza, General History Department, Ashar khan, s/o M. According to statistics of the results, some 268 candidates registered themselves with the KU exams department, of which 255 candidates appeared in the exams.

Some 40 candidates secured first division, while 79 secured second and 24 candidates got third division.

The pass percentage remained 56.07.

Teacher resigns: The convener of Karachi University’s Transport Committee and a faculty member at varsity’s Pharmacy Department, Dr Wasimuddin, on Tuesday resigned from his job after he was allegedly subjected to violence by some activists of the

All Pakistan Mohajir Students’ Organisation (APMSO).

Dr Wasimuddin and Mehmood Alam, another employee of varsity’s Transport Department, were severely beaten up by the APMSO activists yesterday for allegedly supporting their rival student group.

“I have tendered my resignation and asked the Vice-Chancellor Dr Saify to relieve me of my duties,” Dr Wasimuddin informed PPI and deplored that administration had failed in providing protection to the teachers an students.

He said he was being forced for quite some time to violate the varsity rules and on his refusal he was threatened by the student group.

Meanwhile, the Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS), while strongly condemning the ugly incident, demanded of the varsity administration to take action against those involved in torturing the teacher.—PPI
